Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Soul Cycle as it’s very famous among influencers, models, YouTubers and actors. I’m sure we’ve all seen social media stars like Remi Aston posting a #fierce boomerang after an intense spin class and wondered, what even is soul cycle?
According to soul-cycle.com , “SoulCycle is a 45-minute indoor cycling class that features high-intensity cardio, muscle-sculpting strength training, and rhythm-based choreography. But it’s so much more than just a workout — it’s a powerful mind-body experience. We ride together as a pack in candlelit studios to the rhythm of one-of-a-kind playlists. We’re coached by magnetic instructors, who support us, coach us and push us to reach our personal bests. We sweat, reach, and recover, together.”
For the last month, I have been going to Dynamo (which is basically the French version of soul cycle here in Paris) at least twice a week and I can really say that it has somewhat changed my life.
When I started going to spin class I wasn’t too sure if I would like it or if it was as intense of a workout as I wanted. Yes, I was one of those people who was sceptical about Soul Cycle. But after my first class when I was sweating bullets and extremely sore the next day, I was proven wrong. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed and here’s why you should try it too :
1. It’s a safe space
Yes, this might sound a bit weird but as I’m sure most ladies can agree with, it’s stressful and intimidating working out in a bright gym for the first time. You feel like everyone is watching you and are scared to make any mistakes.
In Soul Cycle, they turn off all the lights in the room. Occasionally they will light some candles or have some cool neon/strobe lights. At first, I thought this was a little weird, 20 strangers biking in an almost pitch black room but it actually adds an element of comfort. No one is watching you and no one can see if you make a mistake or look like a complete mess. All that social anxiety and pressure that can come with working out in a group is automatically taken away.
2. It works out different parts of your body
If you think Soul Cycle Is just riding a bike that you’re attached to, you’re completely wrong. In fact, most of the time you aren’t even sitting on the bike! Throughout the class, you are given different positions and exercises to do. This ranges from standing up and peddling, to doing push up’s on the handlebars, to a 10-minute arm workout with two, five-pound weights to stretching at the end. In just 45-minutes you are not only working out your legs, but also your thighs, abs, and arms.
3. It’s motivating as hell
A big reason why I’m such a fan of this workout is because of the instructors. I’ve done numerous taught, group classes and I’ve even tried personal trainers but none of them were as uplifting and motivating as the Soul Cycle instructors.
Instead of focusing on losing weight or burning the most calories, the instructors are trying to bring all the attention on mindfulness and feeling good inside and out. They are encouraging everyone to reach their own unique goals. They are cheering you on and if a woman yelling “you can do this because you can do anything you set your mind to!” isn’t extremely motivating at 7 AM then what is?
4. It’s addicting
Walking out of my first class, exhausted and drenched in sweat, I knew that even though that was one of the hardest workouts I’ve done in a while, I still wanted to come back the next day.
I don’t specifically know what it is about Soul Cycle that’s so addicting! Maybe it’s a combination of feeling good after finishing the workout or how motivating the coaches are but either way you will want to come back for a second class.
5. You will see good changes being made to your body
In my first class I remember the instructor asking us “Why are you here today?” and my immediate answer was to gain more muscle in my legs, become stronger and to have my body in shape for my upcoming trip to Asia.
And after 30 days of doing Soul Cycle about twice a week, I have noticed the change this workout has done to my body. My legs, abs and arms are stronger and more toned. Of course, there’s still more progress to be made but I really notice the benefits of this exercise for my overall physique.
So, if you’re someone who’s been sceptical about trying out this new trendy workout, I would definitely recommend giving it a try!
