I sat down with Svita Sobolyva, a 21-year-old business owner and #girlboss from the Ukraine who’s currently based in Paris. In addition to running a successful online store, she attends the American school, Parsons Paris, where she’s earning or masters in Fashion Studies. Her website, The Gypset Girl, is a platform for girls who wants to differentiate themselves by wearing cool, sexy clothes with a meaning behind them. She is characterized by her need for an alternative lifestyle full of travel and fashion. It’s for the girls who can afford to buy high end brands but wants to stand out in a crowd. Sobolvya started this platform for emerging designers from post-soviet space, displayed further through a visual inspiration blog and Instagram account.
Q: How did you form the idea behind your website?
A: : I was initially inspired by small emerging Instagram brands that were different and unique and then I realized my country – post-soviet space – has a lot to offer the world. Where I come from, people who tend to buy very expensive brands, but I noticed there is nothing in-between. I decided for my website I wanted to become a bridge between these worlds, the high-end luxury brands and the young consumers looking for unique clothes.
I financial issues and could not spend as much as I used to, so my perception of being fashionable has changed and inspired me to look more into small growing brands than just already well-established ones.
Q: How do you choose what products to sell on your site?
A: Me and my girlfriends just look and ask, “would I wear that?”
Q: Where do you look for inspiration?
A: My friends, my university, public places. Definitely night life, I watch people in clubs and restaurants, if they’re wearing something unlike everyone else.
I love looking to cinematography as well. I’m inspired business wise Chiara Ferragni, she started from nothing. If I met her I would bown down.

Q: What are three things that are always in your purse?
A: My diary, I’m horrible with organization and I have to write everything down. My cross, I believe it protects me everywhere I go. Hair ties because it makes me feel more serious and powerful during the day
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A: A main buyer for a big online store like Net-A-Porter or Mytheresa, or maybe a trend forecaster.
Q: Do you have a motto?
A: I have a few:
Avoid empty conversations
Don’t make excuses
It’s better to do something and know it wasn’t the best idea, rather than wondering how it could be
